For nearly 12 years, Cheryl Numark owned and directed the premiere contemporary art gallery in Washington, D.C. Numark Gallery was known for representing and exhibiting an international roster of contemporary artists, ranging from emerging and mid-career talent, to well established, blue chip artists.
Many artists shown by Numark have risen to international renown, including: Michal Rovner, Tony Feher, Glenn Ligon, Tara Donovan, Kara Walker, Zwelethu Mthethwa and Dan Steinhilber, among others.
Cheryl Numark has sold works of art to numerous top-level collectors and corporations in Washington, D.C. and internationally, as well as to many major museums worldwide.
Cheryl Numark graduated from the University of Chicago,BA 1979, majoring in English Literature, where she was editor-in-chief of The Chicago Review, a contemporary literary magazine. After college she moved to New York and worked as an assistant editor at George Braziller, an art book publisher, and St. Martins Press. She went to law school at the University of Pennsylvania, JD 1986, and practiced communications and mass media law in her hometown of Washington D.C. for seven years. In 1993, she left the law to pursue her true passion in the contemporary art world, with plans to open a contemporary art gallery. Opening in 1995, the Numark Gallery was the premier gallery for contemporary art in Washington D.C. for twelve years. Cheryl has been President of Cheryl Numark Art Advisory since 2008.
